This makes a great centrepiece to any Christmas Party. Your family and friends will surely be impressed when you bake this delightful Christmas Tree Bread filled with Nutella
- 450g /1lb of Bread Flour
- 70g / 2.5oz / 1/3 of a cup of Sugar
- 2 Teaspoons of Active Dried Yeast
- A pinch of Salt
- 30g / 1oz of soft Butter
- 250ml / 8.5fl oz / 1 of a cup of warmed Milk
- 2 Egg Yolks (keep the whites to glaze the bread)
- 1 cup of Nutella
- A little Vegetable Oil
- Place the flour into a bowl and add the dry ingredients – that’s the sugar, yeast, and salt.
- Use a fork to mix them together.
- Next add the wet ingredients – the butter, warmed milk and egg yolks.
- Using the fork, start to bind all the ingredients together and then using your hands form the mixture into a dough.
- Remove the dough from the bowl and place onto the work counter. Using the heel of your hand knead the dough for approximately 10 minutes until the dough is beautifully smooth and silky.
- Pour the vegetable oil into your bowl and roll the dough in the oil so it is coated all over.
- Seal the bowl with plastic wrap or cover with a damp cloth and leave in a warm place for at least a couple of hours to allow the dough to rise.
- Now, how quickly the dough rises depends on how warm the area is where you place the bowl but you want the dough to at least double in size.
- Once the dough has risen remove it from the bowl and place it on a warm surface. Knead it gently to knock the air out. Form the dough into ball.
- Cut the dough into 4 equal pieces.
- At this stage you will be working on one piece of dough so keep the other pieces covered with a damp cloth.
- Taking one piece of dough roll it into a ball. Dust the counter with a little flour and using a rolling pin roll the dough out to form a long triangle shape like a Christmas Tree. The dough needs to be fairly thin.
- Lift the piece of dough onto a piece of waxed paper.
- Warm the Nutella slightly and then spread all over the triangle shape dough but don’t go right to the bottom of the triangle, except in the middle which is the tree trunk, as this part of the dough is cut off and doesn’t need Nutella on it.
- Slide a baking tray under the paper and dough and pop to one side.
- Take the second piece of dough and roll out to form another triangle shape to match the first one.
- Gently lift the second triangle and lay it on top of the Nutella covered first piece of dough.
- Cover with Nutella once again and place to one side.
- Repeat steps 16 to 18 once more with the third piece of dough.
- Finally repeat steps 16 and 17 with the last piece of dough but don’t top this with Nutella.
- Remove the baking tray for these next steps as you will be cutting with a sharp knife and you may damage the tray.
- Using a straight edge, take a sharp knife and cut along both sides of the ‘dough tree’ to form nice straight edges.
- Form the ‘trunk’ by cutting off the excess dough at the bottom.
- Now mark two imaginary lines up the centre of the dough from the trunk to the top. Allow the lines to taper inwards towards the top.
- Working on one side at a time. Cut,using a sharp knife, from the imaginary line to the edge at about 1 inch / 2.5 cm intervals all the way to the top.
- Do the same on the other side matching the cut lines as you go.
- Now for the fun part. Take each piece of dough that has been cut and twist it twice, twisting towards the top of the tree, and lay it back down.
- Continue until all the pieces have been twisted. As you get nearer the top you can only give one twist.
- Slide the baking tray back under the paper, cover with a damp cloth and leave in a warm place for 30-40 minutes to allow the dough to puff up a little.
- Pre heat the oven to 180’C / 350’F.
- Mix the egg whites with a little milk and whisk together. Brush the egg white wash over the tree and place in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.
- Mix a little sugar with hot water and brush this over the entire bread. This gives a nice shine to your bread.
- Whilst the bread is still wet from the sugar and water mix sprinkle some white sesame seeds over the edges of the ‘branches’ so it looks like snow.
- Gently slide off the baking tray onto a serving tray and Enjoy!!!
